Propagation
Sow fresh seeds during autumn or stratify for three months prior to sowing in a prepared bed.
Botanic information
Leaf: The palmate leaves have 5-7 oblong-obovate leaflets up to 150mm (6in) long. They have an acuminate apex and a cuneate base with a short stalk. The margin may be double-serrate and the underside is slightly pubescent.
The petiole up to 127mm (5in) long and the brown imbricate terminal buds are glabrous, up to 12mm (½in) long. The lateral buds are smaller and are up to 8mm (?in) long. During autumn the leaves turn reddish before falling.
Flower: The red tubulate flowers have 4 to 5-red petals that may be marked in yellow and has exserted stamens. The flowers are arranged in a narrow-conical panicle up to 204mm (8in) tall by 76mm (3in) wide and appear during early summer.
Fruit: The smooth skinned dehiscent ovoid capsule contains 1-2 rounded brown seeds.
