Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are elliptical-ovate to oblong-ovate or obovate with an abrupt acute apex and a cuneate base. The upper surface is glossy dark green and the underside is pale green covered in minute pubescence particularly on the veins. During autumn the leaves turn yellow to deep orange before falling.
The tiny broad, avoid buds have imbricate brownish scales with darker stripes and are pubescent at the tips.
Flower: The pale yellow campanulate flowers are particularly pubescent on the outside of the 3-7 lobes. The smaller male flower has 16 to 24 stamens and the female flowers have 8-staminodes. They are arranged in the leaf axils towards the end of the branches and appear on different trees (dioecious) during spring.
Fruit: The variable shaped globose juicy berry is a yellow maturing to orange with an enlarged persistent calyx at the base and contains 1 to 10 seeds. The fruit only appears on female trees and male trees required for pollination.
