Botanic information
Leaf: The leathery textured leaves are ovate to orbicular with a swollen bladder-like petiole that is up to 250 mm (9µ in) long and enablesthe plant to float.
Flower: The expanded funnelform flowers have 6-petals that are pale blue to violet with a conspicuous yellow blotch on the inner 3-petals. They are arranged in a 150mm (6in) long spike that is held above the foliage on thickish scape during summer. On maturity the spike turns downwards into the water for seed dispersal.
Fruit: The dehiscent capsule contains up to 300 seeds that are dispersed by water and are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
