Botanic information
Leaf: The terete or broad lanceolate leathery texture leaves have a channelled upper surface and keeled on the underside. The apex varies from accumulate to obtuse and the margin is sharply serrated or distinctly lobed. The leaves are arranged in 2-ranks along the stem.

Flower: The medium to largecrateriform flowers are showy and intricate with a fleshy texture and persist on the plant for several days. They are arranged in an axillary or sometimes terminal raceme with the flowers appearing on a leafless scape. There are many hybrids, which are available in a wide range of colours and in tropical regions flowering appear throughout the year.

Fruit: They have a single chambered capsular fruit that contains many small seed with no endosperm. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively, to maintain true to type.

Culture
Generally the plants prefer a well lit humid position and monitoring the plant is important. If the leaves are dark green, slightly pendulous and do not growing closely together at the base they considered in poor health resulting from, insufficient light and commonly associated with excessive moisture.

The preferred appearance is stiff leathery, yellow-green and growing close together at the base. This is an indication the plant is enjoying good cultural conditions with ample light and though the plant may seem less attractive it will flower more freely.
