Propagation
Sow fresh seed during early spring and pre-soak seeds in heated water 13º to 18ºC (55º to 64ºF) for 24 hours.
Division of suckers during spring.
Botanic information
Leaf: The ensiform leaves are up to 100mm (4in) wide and is stiff and erect with small reddish teeth along the margins. The underside glaucescent and the apex is long-acuminate.
Flower: The small male and female flowers appear on different plants. The fragrant male flowers appear in spikes that are accompanied with bracts and the female flowers are arranged in a globose head. They appear in early winter but may appear throughout the year in tropical regions.
Fruit: The large fruit (syncarp) is red-purplish on the lower half and contains up to 200-drupes up to 33mm (1¥in) long each containing 4-8 cells. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
The flowering and fruiting period may vary in tropical regions.
