Botanic information
Leaf: The fleshy glabrous leaves are elliptical to ovate up to 18 mm (? in)wide with an acuminate apex and a cuneate base with a short petiole. The upper surface is glossy dark green and the underside has red glands and a prominent mid-rib.
Flower: The tubulate flowers have 5- linear to lanceolate calyx lobes with the lower three having red nectar secreting glands. The white corolla has a cylindrical expanding tube with a wide mouth and a yellow throat with 5-rounded spreading lobes, that may be pink tinted.
There are 1-4 flowers arranged in an axillary cyme that appears from late spring to summer or in tropical regions sporadically throughout the year.
Fruit: The 2-valved ovoid to globose capsule is dehiscent releasing numerous seeds which are disbursed by ants. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
