Propagation
Seed is slow to germinate taking up to 6 months. Remove outer shell before sowing and keep moist. Seedlings are slow growing.
Mature plants can be transplanted and care should be taken not to damage the fleshy roots.
Botanic information
Leaf: The pinnate fronds are arching or recurved with spines on the long petiole. The blue-green leaflets are numerous and tapering in an upward direction forming a 'V' shape then becoming pendant.
Flower: This palm is monoecious and the creamy-yellow male and female flowers appear together in a pendant panicle from lower fronds during summer. The large woody bracts are up to 1m (3 ft) long and persist on the plant turning purplish at maturity.
Fruit: The large oblong-ovoid, yellowish drupe is pulpy and fibrous up to 40 mm (1? in) long. The persistent petals and sepals are attached to the base.
