Botanic information
Leaf: The glabrous ovate leaves have an acuminate apex and a green petiole up to 50 mm (2 in) long. The upper surface is a dark green and the underside is pale green with a prominent pinnate venation.
Flower: The scarlet 2-lipped corolla is glandular-viscid and is accompanied by reddish almost orbicular viscid-tomentose bracts. They are arranged in a dense terminal raceme that appears from spring to early summer but in tropical regions the flowering period may vary.
Fruit: The tiny viable seeds are produced via a nutlet that develops inside the calyx. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
