Botanic information
Leaf: The pinnate leaves have 2 to 3 pairs of oval to obovate leathery texture leaflets that glossy dark green above and dull green below, up to 100mm (4in) long. The apex is obtuse or emarginate and the margins may be undulating. The yellowish petiole is up to 50mm (2in) long.
Flower: The tiny petal-less tubulate flower may appear on different trees (dioecious) and have 5-lobes and 5-stamens. The scented male flowers are arranged in a catkin-like raceme and the female flowers are solitary, appearing on old wood during spring.
Fruit: The flattened leathery black-brown legume is indehiscent and contains sweet pulp between the large glossy brown seeds. Bats eat the ripe fruit and dispersed the seeds. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
