Propagation
Place spores on sterilised sphagnum moss, peat moss, bricks or terracotta pot base then cover with glass and keep moist. 4 to 6 weeks until prothalli appears. True fronds appear between 6-12 months after sowing.
Division during the growing period, cut the rhizomes in to lengths and plant apex upwards, apply bottom heat and keep moist.
Note:
This fern differs from others as the main climbing part is the rhachis of the frond and branches appear alternately along it. Secondary branches bear the leaflets.
Botanic information
Leaf: The bright green pinnate fronds are broadly triangular in outline with a petiole up to 250 mm (9µ in) long with sterile leaflets that are ovate-cuneate with slightly crenate margins. The fertile fronds are oblong 1-pinnate up to 140 mm (5½ in) long by 60 mm (2? in) wide with ovate to lanceolate-oblong ultimate segments that are fringed with a fertile lobes or are similar but smaller than the sterile fronds.
Flower: The fertile fronds produced sporangia on the underside of the fringed lobes and appear during summer or sporadically throughout the year in tropical regions.
Fruit: The spores are produced in the oblong sporangium during the sporophyte stage of the fern life cycle in rows on the back of the fertile frond. The spores are very small (like fine dust) and are released from the sori when mature and dispersed by wind or water.
