Botanic information
Leaf: The bright green leaves are up to 40mm (1½in) wide, obovate to broad-elliptical with a short reddish petiole and an abruptly acuminate apex. The texture is leathery and the leaves are a feature of the plant.
Flower: The small tubulate flowers are cylindrical in bud and split open with 4-recurved segments forming a star-shape with 4-protuding curled stamens. The pedicle is up to 8mm (?in) long and the flowers are arranged in the leaf axils at the end of the branches from spring to early summer.
Fruit: The small rounded drupe is held out from the stem on a short reddish stalk and the small seeds are viable but may be difficult to germinate so the plant is normally reproduced vegetatively.
