Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green leathery oblong to ovate leaves have a short petiole and an obtuse apex and the surface is glabrous. The venation is pinnate on the upper surface and the underside is yellow-green.
Flower: The tiny turban-like campanulate male flowers have 6-lobes and a central column with 3-stamens and the female flowers are 3-locular each with 2-ovules and 3-free styles. They appear solitary or in pairs pendently in the leaf axils on slender short pedicel from late spring to early summer.
Fruit: The pendant pink-red berry is globular and contains several seeds. Birds are attracted to the fruit and help in dispersal. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
