Botanic information
Leaf: The silvery green long linear leaves are covered in course hairs (hirsute) and the apex is acuminate. Older leaves become lax and the texture is rough.

Flower: The plant is dioecious with the 2-flowered male spikelets arranged in a narrow bracketed spike up to 40mm (1½in) long and are clustered in groups of 4, 5 or 6. The female spikelets are up to 15mm (?in) long arranged in a globular head with long rhachis. They appear fom spring to late summer.

Note
The female spikelets are solitary at the base of the spine-like rachis which are up to 120mm (4µin) long. The ball-like flower head breaks at the stem node and is blown across the sand distributing the seeds.

Fruit: The small caryopsis (seeds) are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
