Propagation
Sow fresh seeds in trays in a sandy loam and cover with washed rivers sand. Keep moist but not wet, and maintain a warm day and cold night temperatures. Germination can take up to one year.
Soft tip cuttings taken during autumn and apply rooting hormone powder. Place in a protected environment and the roots appear normally within five weeks.
Botanic information
Leaf: The grey green sessile leaves are obovate to narrow-oblong and the margin is entire with an obtuse apex that has 7-14 glandular teeth which are tipped in red. They are arranged alternately and spirally along the whitish pubescent stems.
Flower: The orange-yellow tubulate flower has a tube that splits on one side with an exserted upward curving orange style. The ovary is sessile and contains 1-ovule. The flowers are arranged in a densely in a pubescent cluster that is surrounded by bracts and is up to 90 mm (3½ in) wide. They appear during late summer.
Fruit: The tiny fruit is a whitish ovoid nutlet and the small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
The seeds are dispersed by birds and ants gather collect and store them in their nests underground where they are safe from bushfires. After the parent plants have been killed by fires the stored seeds germinate.
