Propagation
Sow fresh seed during early spring or when available in pots and place in a cold frame to germinate. Pre-soak seeds in heated water 13º to 18ºC (55º-64ºF) for 24 hours. Seeds may require scarification.
Botanic information
Leaf: The mid green phillodes are variable from elliptical to lanceolate with a thick leathery texture. The red to yellow margins are thickened and the prominent mid vein ends in a hooked point.
Flower: The bisexual tubulate flowers have inconspicuous sepals and petals and prominentstamens that are tipped in yellow. They appear in a ball-shaped head on asmooth peduncle that is up to 10mm (?in) long and are arranged in a an axillary cluster at the end of the branches. The flowers appear from winter to early spring.
Fruit: The flattened, twisted dark brown pod is reddish when young and has thickened margins ending in a hooked point. The texture is leathery and constricted around the seeds. The glossy brown seeds are up to 4mm (?in) long arranged longitudinally in the pod.
Pruning
Tolerates a light prune after flowering back to a node, remove any dead wood back to the collar. If there is insufficient light towards the base of the tree prune the crown to allow the light in. The plants tend to be easily damaged by wind or borers, and damaged material should be removed.
