Propagation
Plant fresh seeds in a deep container to 150mm (6in) deep during spring, keep moist and maintain a temperature of 19º to 27ºC. (66º to 81ºF).
Sporadic germination may take up to 18 months and, do not allow the seed to dry out before sowing.
Botanic information
Leaf: The pleated costapalmate fronds are divided up to half way with wide stiff pointed segments. It has a long unarmed petiole that arches and the glossy green leaves are the main feature of the plant.
Flower: The small bisexual cyathiform flowers have 3-sepals, the 3-petals are deciduous. They are arranged in a short branched inflorescence that is encased in sword-like, tubular bracts. Flowering period is late spring but varies in tropical regions.
Fruit: The globose drupe has a persistent calyx at the base and contains one seed with endosperm. The mesocarp is slightly fleshy with longitudinal fibres and matures to a reddish brown. The small seeds have a short viability period but germinate readily.
