Propagation
Collect and sow seed when ripe, keep moist, maintaining a temperature of 19º to 27º C. (66º to 81º F) Germination normally takes up to 60 days and the viability period is short. Do not allow the seeds to dry out before sowing as this inhibits germination.
Botanic information
Leaf: The large dark green pinnate fronds have numerous pendant lanceolate leaflets that taper to an acuminate apex. They arise from different planes giving it a plume-like appearance. The petiole is up to 450mm (18in) long and the fronds have a crown shaft to 1.3m (5ft) long.
Flower: The inflorescence is up to 1m (3ft) long with straight branchlets with clusters of cup-shaped flowers. It appears below the crown shaft with the cyathiform male and female flowers arranged in groups of three with 1-female to 2-males in the lower branchlets.They appear during early summer.
Fruit: The small spherical drupe is black-purple when mature and are produced in large numbers. The seed has a ruminate appearance on the endosperm.
Flowering and fruiting periods vary in tropical regions.
