Propagation
Collect and sow seed when ripe, keep moist, maintaining a temperature of 19º to 27º C. (66º to 81º F).
Germination normally takes up to 120 days and the viability period is short. Do not allow the seeds to dry out before sowing.
Division of the clump in spring.
Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green palmate fronds have 3 to 6 variable shaped leaf segments that are elliptical to oblong with a thin textured. They are tough and have a toothed, truncate apex. The slender petiole to 300mm (1ft) long has persistent fibrous sheaths.
Flower: The sessile cyathiform male flowers have a corolla with 3-lobes with 6-stamens and the female is similar on a short stalk and contains 3-carpels. They are arranged in a male or female branched panicle that appears amongst the leaves during summer on different plants.
Fruit: The small berry-like drupe is globose with a fleshy mesocarp containing 1-seed or is lobed with each lobe having a seed containing endosperm and giving the appearance of separate fruit. The fruit is not commonly used and the plant is normally reproduced vegetatively.
