Propagation
Collect and sow seed when ripe, keep moist, maintaining a temperature of 19º to 27º C. (66º to 81º F) use bottom heat.

Germination normally takes up to 30 days but may be erratic. Do not allow the seeds to dry out before sowing as this inhibits germination.


Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green fronds are up to 2m (6ft) wide and are divided into broad segments that are divided into tapering, pendant smaller segments. The petiole is up to 2.2m (7ft) long with a yellow stripe on the lower margin and the upper is armed with 75mm (3in) long curved spines.

Flower: The branched inflorescence appears amongst the leaf bases and the peduncle is accompanied with several leathery bracts. The lower rachillae have campanulate flowers in threes, arranged with 2-male and 1-female and the upper with solitary male flowers.

The flowers consist of 3-sepals and 3-valvate petals. The male flower contains 6-stamens and the female has a tapering pointed style with a 3-celled ovary each with a single ovule.

Fruit: The large globular drupe has a dull brown warty exocarp and is up to 75mm (3in) wide and the flesh is bright orange. The flowering and fruiting period may vary in tropical regions.
