Propagation
Plant fresh seeds in a deep container during spring, keep moist and maintain a temperature of 25ºC (77º F). Germination takes up to 90 days and do not allow the seed to dry out before sowing. Dry seed germinate more slowly.


Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green costapalmate fronds have stiff linear segments that are divided up to half way into the frond and are pendant at the split apex. The slender petiole is up to 2.4m (8ft) long and armed with sharp purplish spines at the base.

Flower: The bisexual creamy white cyathiform flowers are arranged in a very long pendant panicle up to 2.4m (8ft) appearing from the leaf bases during summer and is sheaved in reddish-brown bracts.

Fruit: The small berry-like drupe has a thin mesocarp and is an attractive bright red, maturing to black.
