Propagation
Plant fresh seeds in a deep container to 150mm (6in) deep during spring, keep moist and maintain a temperature of 25ºC (77º F). Germination ranges from 90 days to 3 years appearing sporadically and do not allow the seed to dry out before sowing. Dry seed may be soaked but germinate more slowly.


Botanic information
Leaf: The mid green fronds are shortly costapalmate with several segments that have a toothed apex. The petiole is up to 1.5m (5ft) long and is armed with spines along the margins on the lower part. There is up to 12-fronds arranged in the crown and is a feature of the plant.

Flower: The bisexual flowers are tubulate to urceolate, solitary or arranged in a cluster on the slender rachillae. The long pendulous panicle appears from the crown with sheathed bracts and has a long rachis with several branches.
The flowering period is during summer but may vary in tropical regions.

Fruit: The small rounded orange-red berry-like drupe has a thin fleshy mesocarp and contains small seeds that have non-ruminate endosperm.
