Propagation
Plant fresh seeds in a deep container to 150mm (6in) deep during spring, keep moist and maintain a temperature of 25ºC (77º F).

Sporadic germination takes up to 18 months and do not allow the seed to dry out before sowing.
Difficult to transplant when young.


Botanic information
Leaf: The grey green costapalmate fronds have up to 50 tapering segments and the protruding petiole causes the leaves to fold, in a 'V' shape. The broad petiole up to 2m (6ft) long and is armed on margins towards the base. It is tinged in red, which extends along the veins of the segments.

Flower: The inflorescence is up to 1.2m (5ft) long with many male rachillae that are up to 300mm (1ft) long. It appears amongst the leaf bases and has sheaved in tubular bracts. The yellowish-brown cyathiform male and female flowers found on different plants (dioecious). The flowering period is during summer but may vary in tropical regions.

Fruit: The rounded drupe has a fleshy-fibrous mesocarp and contains 1 to 3 grooved seeds. The seeds have homogeneous endosperm.
