Propagation
Collect and sow seed when ripe, keep moist, maintaining a temperature of 25ºC (77º F). Germination takes up to 90 days. Do not allow the seeds to dry out before sowing and the viability can vary for no apparent reason.
Note
The growth rate is slow at first and after a small trunk is formed the growth rate can be fast under optimum conditions.
Botanic information
Leaf: The mid green pinnate fronds have a unarmed petiole that is up to 600mm (2ft) long and has narrow tapering lanceolate leaflets that are pendant at the tips and are arrqanged in one plane. The leaflets are arranged along a rachis that twists mid way, up to 90º giving the crown a spiralling effect.
Flower: The panicle is up to 1.2m (4ft) long appearing amongst the leaf bases with 2-unequal beaked, cylindrical bracts. It is branched with many rachillae that carry small unisexual white cyathiform flowers in groups of three with 2-male and 1-female. The flowering period is during summer but may vary in tropical regions.
Fruit: The small berry-like drupe is white maturing to red and arranged in pendant clusters that drape below the crown.
