Propagation
Plant fresh seeds in a deep container to 150mm (6in) deep during spring, keep moist and maintain a temperature of 25ºC (77º F). Germination can be quick 30 days or up to 1-year and do not allow the seed to dry out before sowing.
Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green pinnate fronds have linear leaflets that are waxy blue-green on the underside and taper to a toothed, truncate apex. Each blade has several ribs that are pendant at the tips and arranged, pointing forward along the arching rachis. The petiole is short with a tubular sheath.
Flower: The inflorescence is up to 1.5m (5ft) long with a short peduncle, deciduous bracts and is twice branched with slender rachillae. It appears from the base of the crown shaft throughout the year and the flowers are grouped, 2-male to 1-female.
Note
The male flowers are symmetrical with 3-imbricate sepals and 3-valvate petals, numerous stamens and a sterile pistil. The female flowers have 3-imbricate sepals and petals and the pistil contains 1-cell with 1-ovule.
There can be several inflorescences appearing at the one time opening consecutively with predominately male flowers in the upper part.
Fruit: The rounded drupe has a fibrous mesocarp and the circular seeds have homogeneous endosperm. The viability period is short.
Note
This palm is also used in street planting in tropical regions and when young in planter boxes or pots. It is fast growing under optimum conditions but will not tolerate cold temperatures or any frost, which can kill the crown.
