Propagation
Plant fresh seeds in a deep container to 150mm (6in) deep during spring, keep moist and maintain a temperature of 25ºC (77º F).

Germination takes from 2-months to 2-years and seedlings appear sporadically. The outer shell may be removed prior to sowing.


Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green pinnate fronds have an unarmed petiole that is up to 300mm (1ft) long with fiberious sheving at the spreading base. The linear segments are up to 1m (3ft) long and arranged in groups at slightly different angles along the rachi and the older segments become pendant.

Flower: The long pendant, branched inflorescence appears from the leaf crown. The small unisexual flowers are arranged in threes with 2-male and 1-female on the lower half and only paired males in the upper. They appear during summer.

Note
The male flowers are asymmetrical with 3-small imbricate sepals that are acute and 3-broad petals that are valvate (touching but not overlapping). They may have a short pedicle and contain 6-stamens. The female have 3- broad imbricate petals and sepals and the pistil contains 3-cells each with a single ovule.

Fruit: The egg-shaped drupe is green turning orange when mature. The endosperm of young seed is liquid-like and is fermented into a local drink.
