Propagation
Plant new seeds in a deep container during spring, keep moist and maintain a temperature of 25ºC (77º F). Germination takes up to 30 days and do not allow the seed to dry out before sowing.
Botanic information
Leaf: The pleated dark green costapalmate fronds have a semi-circular outline and the petiole is up to 1.2m (4ft) long extending slightly into the leaf. The stiff segments are linear tapering to a split point with bluish-green scales on the underside. The petiole and sheath is covered in whitish tomentum.
Flower: The bisexual campanulate flowers are elongated in bud with 3-sepals and 3-petals that fall when the flower opens. They are arranged in a branched panicle that arises from the leaf bases on a long stalk and is enclosed by a series of tubular bracts that are persistent appearing during summer.
Note
In tropical regions the flowering period may occur through out the year.
Fruit: The globose drupe has a persistent calyx at the base and contains one seed with endosperm. The mesocarp is slightly fleshy with longitudinal fibres and matures to a greenish brown. The small seeds have a short viability period but germinate readily.
