Propagation
The seeds germinate sporadically and can take up to 12 months. The plant is normally propagated by division of the clump in spring.


Botanic information
Leaf: There are 10 to 16 dark green costapalmate fronds arranged in a rounded crown each are divided almost to the petiole by stiff linear tapering segments that are divided at the tip. The petiole is up to 1m (3ft) long and armed with short sharp spines.

Flower: The small whitish bisexual cyathiform flowers are arranged in groups or 2 to 3 and then arranged in a dense branched yellowish cluster up to 1m (3ft) long that is held above the crown. They appear during early summer.

Fruit: The small oval orange pome ripens to shiny black and has a thin fleshy mesocarp. They are arranged in a pendant cluster and the seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
