Propagation
Seeds require scarification and stratifying prior to sowing. Germination may take up to 2 years.
Soft tip cuttings of non-flowering shoots during the growing period.
Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green leaves have 7 to 11-ovate to broad-lanceolate leathery leaflets with a reddish stalk and mid rib. The apex is acuminate and the base is rounded. During autumn the leaves turn purplish before falling.
Flower: The bisexual white to pink cyathiform flowers have 5-sepals, petals and stamens. They are arranged in a terminal panicle that is up to 255mm (10in) wide and appear during early summer.
Fruit: The leathery pod is arranged in groups of three, opening to reveal a glossy black seed that is up to 7mm (¥in) long. The fruit is a feature and is persistent on the plant. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
