Propagation
Sow seed when ripe during autumn in pots and place in a cold frame to germinate. This species is quick to germinate.
Semi hardwood cuttings taken during summer and apply bottom heat.

Seed sowing for Ilexspecies.
Collect and remove pulp from the seeds then wash. Seeds (nutlets) that float should be discarded and when sowing place in well drained media and maintain a temperature of 18º to 21º C. (64º to 75º F). Certain species germinate quickly while others take up to 18 months.


Botanic information
Leaf: The dull green leaves are elliptical to oblong with a short petiole to 4mm (?in)and the margin is undulating with up to 20 teeth that are sharply pointed. The under side is pitted with clear (pellucid) glands and the upper surface is glabrous.

Flower: The small male and female 4-pettaled rotate flowers appear on separate plants (dioecious) with the new foliage in an axillary cyme with up to 7-blooms from late spring to early summer.

Fruit: The small berry-like drupe is glossy black containing 4-nuttlets and is persistent on the female plant until spring. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
