Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn and maintain a temperature of 16º to 18º C. (61º to 64º F).
Semi-hardwood cuttings taken during summer apply bottom heat.
Note:
The wood used in construction in its native region and this species may be difficult to obtain from nurseries in countries with cooler climates.
Botanic information
Leaf: The variable leaves are elliptical to oblong-lanceolate or ovate with an entire to serrated margin. The texture is leathery to papery and the leaves are alternate to spirally arranged.
Flower: The buds are reddish and the bisexual cyathiform flowers open with 5-6 unequal petals and many clustered yellowish stamens. The ovary is superior with 5-7 cells. The flowers appear solitary in the leaf axils or are arranged in a raceme-like cluster towards the end of the branches from late summer to autumn.
Fruit: The globose woody capsule is whitish to red-violet and maturing black. It has 5-7 individual carpels that contain 3-winged seeds. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
