Botanic information
Leaf: The small glabrous obovate leaves are arranged in opposite pairs (one larger than the other) alternately along the stem. The margin may be slightly serrated and the texture is thick and leathery. The petiole is short and the apex is acute to obtuse.
Flower: The tiny vanilla-scented apetalous flowers have exserted stamens and are arranged in an axillary umble that is up to 10mm (½in) wide. The inflorescence is hidden, appearing on the underside of the foliage from late winter to early spring.
Fruit: The small berry is white to mauve turning orange on maturity. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
