Propagation
Sow seed when ripe during autumn in pots or in a cold frame, germination takes up to 12 months.
Cultivars are budded onto rootstocks.
Botanic information
Leaf: The ovate leaves have 3 to 5 pointed lobes with a variable base that is truncate to cordate. The margin is finely serrated and the slender petiole is up to 50mm (2in) long. During autumn the leaves turn red before falling.
Flower: The small cyathiform (cup-shaped) flowers are arranged in an erect axillary raceme to 75mm (3in) long that is covered in rust-coloured pubescence. They appear during late spring.
Fruit: The samara are arranged in pairs with the wings spread at around 100º and are initially covered in reddish pubescence.
