Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green leaves are ovate-oblong up to 25mm (1in) wide with an obtuse apex and a cuneate base. The margin is coarsely serrated and the pubescent petiole is short. There is obvious pinate-vienation on the upper surface and underside is pale green.
Flower: The tiny sub-sessile campanulate male flowers have 5-lobes and are arranged in a spike of three to five. The tiny female flowers are sessile and globose and are arranged in threes surrounded by an invocular. The flowers are normally inconspicuous, appearing during spring and not a feature of the plant.
Fruit: The small nut is surrounded by a cup-shaped sheath that is up to 10mm (?in) long and separates into 4-segments. The tiny nuts (beechnuts) are pubescent and the viability period is short.
