Propagation
Stratify seeds for 2 to 3 months during winter and sow seeds in pots, then place in a cold frame to germinate.


Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green leaves are broad ovate to almost orbicular with prominent pinnate venation on the upper surface. The petiole is short and the apex is obtuse. During autumn the leaf turns reddish then gold brfore falling and is excellent colour contrast subject.

Flower: The tiny sub-sessile male campanulate flowers have 5-lobes and 3-5 are arranged in a spike. The tiny female flowers are sessile and globose and are arranged in threes surrounded by an invocular. The flowers appear during early spring but are normally inconspicuous.

Fruit: The small nut is surrounded by a cup-shaped sheath that is up to 10mm (?in) long and separates into 4-segments. The tiny nuts (beechnuts) are pubescent and the viability period is short.
