Propagation
Sow fresh seeds during autumn or stratify for three months prior to sowing in a prepared bed.
Cultivars are grafted onto the species rootstock.
Note:
All parts of the plant if ingested will cause stomach upset.
Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green palmate leaves have 5 to 7 obovate sessile leaflets that are up to 250mm (10in) long with a cuneate base and an abruptly acuminate apex. They are yellow-green when young and turning dark green with age then turn a dull yellow-brown before falling in autumn.
Flower: The white perfect funnelform flowers have 4 or 5 crimpled petals that have a yellow basial marking that becomes red with age. They are arranged in an upright terminal panicle that is up to 300mm (1ft) tall by 125mm (5in) wide and appear during late spring and are a feature of the plant.
Fruit: The large light brown dehiscent capsule is leathery and round, covered in short sharp spikes. It may contain one or two dark brown hard seeds.
