Propagation
Sow fresh seed when ripe in containers and place in a cold frame or sow in a prepared bed. Seeds may require some stratification.
Botanic information
Leaf: The 4-sided acicular leaves are slightly flattened pointing forward and crowded along the orange-brown shoots. The apex is acute and a whitish bloom may be present. When crushed the leaves have a rank odour.
Flower: The small male strobili are dark purple appearing in the leaf axils and the terminal female cones are bright scarlet-crimson appearing upright on the branchlets during late spring.
Fruit: The ovoid to cylindrical cones have a short stalk or are sessile and have flexible thin scales that are irregularly serrated. They fall in the first season during autumn and have broad black seeds up to 3mm (?in) long with an oblique wing to 12mm (½in).
