Propagation
Sow fresh seed during early spring and pre-soak seeds in heated water 13º to 18ºC (55º-64ºF) for 24 hours. Seeds may require scarification.
Divide established clumps (rhizome) during spring.
Botanic information
Leaf: The oblong leaf has a soft lamina that tears easily creating irregular sized segments and the midrib is thick, strong and red on the underside. The margins are undulating and the sheaved petiole is long and the apex is obtuse.
Flower: The tubulate female flowers appear first and are followed by the male flowers and are arranged in 2-rows per bract. The flowers may also be bisexual. The pear-shaped terminal spike is has pinkish bracts and is upright becoming pendent with age and appears during early summer.
Fruit: The elongated berry has a fleshy texture and the small seeds have a hard bony seed coat. After the fruit is formed the stem dies. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
