Propagation
Sow fresh seeds during spring in flats and prick out when larger to handle.

Take softwood cuttings during spring and semi-hardwood cuttings in summer. Place in a very well-drained media or in situ.


Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green obovate leaves have an obtuse apex and a short petiole that becomes spinose. The secondary leaves appeared in a cluster in the spine axil and the long pungent spines are greyish. During dry periods the leaves are quickly shed.

Flower: The red tubular flowers have 5-sepals and petals and up to 17 exserted stamens. They are arranged in a pyramidal panicle that is up to 350 mm (14 in) tall and appear from spring to summer and sporadically throughout the year.

Fruit: The light brown capsule has three valves and contains several hard seeds that a viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
