Botanic information
Leaf: The large fronds are erect at first becoming spreading with a base that has long spines along the margins. The leaflets are dark green above and satin-white below and arranged in several ranks along the rachis giving a plumose appearance.
Flower: A succession of large pendant panicles that are up to 2m (6ft) long appear above the leaf base at first then down the trunk. When tapped they produce a sweet sap, hence (Sugar Palm). The 2-male and 1-female flower appear in a cluster in the panicle.
Note
The inflorescence may produce only female or male flowers, but normally both sexes are found on the same plant. After the flowering period has finished the trunk dies.
The male flowers have 3-imbricate sepals and 3-larger petals and contain numerous stamens. The female flower has 3-sepals and petals that are joined at the base and may contain sterile stamens.
The ovary is 2 to 3 celled with 1-ovule and a 3-lobed stigma. The flowering period can vary in tropical regions and they may appear throughout the year.
Fruit: The globular pome is produced in panicles and are yellowish maturing to black.
