Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn in containers.
Take semi hardwood cuttings taken during summer. Take hardwood cuttings taken during winter then placed in a prepared bed in a cold frame.
Cultivars are budded during summer.
Botanic information
Leaf: The broad-ovate leaves are glossy with prominent veins on the upper surface. The apex is acuminate and the base is cordate or rounded. The petiole is up to 25mm (1in) long and the surface is almost glabrous.
Flower: The tiny male and female cyathiform flowers are produced on separate pendulous catkins that are up to 12mm (½in) long. Both flowers are found on the same tree and a cluster of female flowers forms a single fruit. They appear during spring.
Fruit: The flower clusters develop into a single oblong drupe that is whitish and with an insipid taste. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
