Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn in a prepared bed.
Take semi-hardwood cuttings taken during summer apply bottom heat.
Divide the suckers when dormant.
Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green trifoliate leaves have 3-ovate leaflets that are up to 75mm (3in) long (laterals smaller) and are coarsely toothed. The petiole is up to 40mm (1½in) long and the lightly pubescent leaflets are aromatic when crushed and turn orange to red-purple in autumn before falling.
Flower: The tiny polygamous male flowers are arranged in catkins that persist on the plant and the female are arranged in a panicle that is up to 20mm (µin) long and appear during early spring.
Fruit: The small spherical pubescent drupe contains one seed and persists on the plant into winter. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
