Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn in a prepared bed, after stratifying for 3 months.
Divide the suckers during spring.
Aerial layering is carried out during the growing period.
Botanic information
Leaf: The bright green leaves are broadly-ovate to oval with an acuminate apex and a rounded or cordate base. The underside of the leaf is lighter green with prominent veins. The pubescent petiole is glandular and is up to 12mm (½in) long.
Flower: The male and female flowers appear on the same plant before the leaves during spring. The pendant male catkin is up to 70mm (2µin) long andproduces masses of yellow pollen. The small greenish females have bright red stigmas and appear in a cluster at branch tips.
Fruit: The fruit is arranged in long downy husks with deep irregular lobes and is surround the 2-6 slightly flattened nuts. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
