Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green leaves are obovate to oval with an acute apex and a rounded base. The petiole is up to 12mm (½in) long and the texture is leathery. The lighter underside is slightly pubescent and the buds are brown, terminal, naked and pubescent, with the laterals being smaller.
Flower: The tiny green cyathiform flowers have 4 to 5-sepals and petals that are expanded and pointed. They are arranged in an axillary umbel or cluster amongst the leaves from late spring to early summr and are very attractive to bees.
Fruit: The fleshy berry-like drupe is red turning black when mature and contains 2-seeds. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
All parts of the plant if ingested may cause severe stomach upset and the seeds are poisonous.
