Sow fresh seed during autumn in a prepared bed.
Divide suckers during spring.
Aerial layering is carried out during the growing period.
Botanic information
Leaf: The mid-green leaves are broad ovate to oval with a cordate base and an acuminate apex. The upper surface has prominentveins and both sides are pubescent particularly beneath. The petiole is pubescent and up to 12mm (½in) long.
Flower: The male and female flowers appear on the same plant before the leaves. The pendant male catkins up to 70mm (2µin) longproduce masses of yellow pollen, and the insignificant greenish female flower appear in a cluster towards the end of the branches during early spring.
Fruit: The rounded nut has a fringed, greenish to brown hard outer husk with a leafy cup-shaped involucre. They are arranged solitary or in groups of four. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
