Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn in pots and place in a cold frame to germinate. Germination may take up to 18 months as the seed has a double dormancy process.

Take hardwood cuttings from summer to autumn.
Aerial layering is carried out during the growing period.


Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are elliptical to oblong and has a cuneate base with a mucronate to acuminate apex. The downy petiole is short, to 25mm (1in) long and the leaf texture is leathery.

The greenish brown ovoid buds have acute, keeled and pointed scales up to 3mm (?in) long.

Flower: The funnelform flowers have 4-expanding petals that are fused at the base; they appear in a soft-textured panicle up to 200mm (8in), giving it a fringed appearance among the new growth. The inflorescences appear on previous season's wood, in the leaf axils during summer.

Fruit: The purplish blue egg-shaped drupe is small and olive-like. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
