Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn in a prepared bed. The seeds require stratifying for up to 12 weeks and cultivars are grafted onto established rootstocks.

Take root cuttings during early spring.

Note:
If plant parts are ingested they may cause stomach upset

Botanic information
Leaf: The palmate leaves have 5 to 9 obovate leaflets that are up to 80mm (3in) long with an acuminate apex and prominent veins on the upper surface. The leaflet base is cuneate and the petiole is long and slender.

Flower: The flowers are funnelform to saccate with a short corolla tube and expanding lobes that are white or pinkish with yellow markings on the inside. The yellowish stamens and style are exserted and the flowers are arranged in a conical panicle that appears from spring to early summer.

Fruit: The spherical capsule is smooth and releases 2-brown nuts. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.

General information on pruning
This genus of trees normal requires little pruning apart from removal of dead or damaged material. The trees may be pruned from beneath, lifting the crown for understorey growth, but care should be taken as the branches are brittle and the heartwood rots easily.
