Propagation
Seeds require scarification by nicking the seed coat and soaking in water for 24 hours prior to sowing.

Stratify fresh seeds for 2 to 3 months at 5º C (41ºF) then sow in spring and maintain a temperature of 12º to 15º C. (55º to 59º F).

Note:
Care should be taken when selecting a sight as the tree has vigorous roots that can lift concrete and block drains.


Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green leaves are broad ovate to reniform with a truncate base. It is densely silvery-grey pubescent on the underside with prominent veins. The apex is acuminate and the slender petiole is up to 40mm (1½in) long.

Flower: The cyathiform flowers have 5-sepals and 5-petals and are toxic to bees. They have a long peduncle with a yellow-green bract that is up to 65mm (2½in) long. They are arranged in an axillary pendulous cyme with up to 10 blooms and appear during summer.

Fruit: The rough textured oval shaped nut-like capsule is arranged in clusters on a long peduncle that is attached to a broad membranaceus bract. This helps with wind dispersal of the seed.

General pruning information

Tolerates pruning to maintain a smaller size for street planting during summer allowing the wounds to heal. As a tree, train to a single leader and remove dead or damaged branches back to the collar.
