Propagation
Stratify seeds and sow during spring.
Take soft tip cuttings of non-flowering shoots during late spring and semi hardwood cuttings during late summer.
General pruning information
Little pruning is normally required apart from crown lifting or thinning. All branches should be cut back to the collar and avoid pruning deciduous species during spring as this encourages bleeding.
Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are elliptical to ovate shinny green above and glaucous beneath. The apex is acute and the petiole is up to 12mm (½in) long. These leaves are smaller than the average Magnolia's and normally remain on the plant except under cold conditions.
Flower: The small cyathiform flowers have 8 to 9-inner, creamy white petals with 6-smaller greenish white outer petals. They appear solitary during summer and have a lemon scent.
Fruit: The follicle is composed aggregated carpels and has a cone-like appearance that exposes redseeds. This is a feature of the plant. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
