Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn in pots and place in a cold frame to germinate which may take up to 2 years.

Take semi hardwood cuttings during late summer.

Seed sowing for Ilexspecies
Collect and remove pulp from the seeds then wash. Seeds (nutlets) that float should be discarded and when sowing place in well drained media and maintain a temperature of 18º to 21º C. (64º to 75º F). Certain species germinate quickly while others take up to 18 months.

Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green leaves are oblong to elliptical with 3-points at the broad apex. The base also has two points but they may not be present on older leaves. The petiole is short and the texture is thick and slightly raised on the upper surface.

Flower: The small rotate flowers have 3 to 8-petals and are arranged in an axillary cluster that appears during spring. The scented male flowers have 4-stamens and the female has a large green ovary. They tend to be insignificant and not a feature of the plant.

Fruit: The large drupes are crimson coloured and persist on the plant throughout summer. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
