Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green ovate leaves have a cordate base and an acute apex. Forward facing parallel veins give the upper surface a quilted appearance and the veins on the underside are pubescent. The petiole is up to 20mm (΅in) long and the new growth isbronze. During autumn the leaves turn golden yellow before falling.
Flower: The small campanulate flowers have 5-sepals and petals with exserted stamens. They are arranged in a small pendant raceme that is up to 30mm (1₯in) long and appears during early spring.
Fruit: The small, 2-beaked capsule is dehiscent and contains 2-valves. It matures amongst the leaves during summer and contains 2-black seeds. The small seeds are viable but may be difficult to germinate so the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
